Four Simple Ways to Open a Wine Bottle without a Wine Key

Picture this. Your glass is ready, you bring out your favorite bottle of wine, and you sit down to have a drink to realize you can't find your bottle opener!

No need to worry! We have four simple ways to help you open your favorite bottle without a wine key!

  1. A long screw, screwdriver, and hammer

    - This method will require some resilience and strength, as it can fatigue you easily. Simply take the screw and screw it into the cork with a screwdriver until there is about an inch or so showing. Then, take the backside of the hammer, lock it under the screw, and pull the cork out.

  2. Apply Heat to Move the Cork Out

    - Use a blowtorch or lighter to apply heat to the neck of the bottle right below the cork. The heat will force the cork to move upward and out of the bottle. However, ensure your bottle isn't cold, or you run the risk of causing an explosion due to the rapid change in temperature. If your bottle has already been refrigerated, let it rest on the counter before applying any heat.

  3. Using a Wire Hanger

    - First, bend the tip of the hanger about 30 degrees back; if you do this correctly it will look like a fish hook. Next, slide the wire into the bottle alongside the cork. Rotate the wire 90 degrees so that the hook is underneath the cork. Simply pull the wire up, and the cork should release. Use a towel or gloves for protection when pulling on the hanger.

  4. Use a High Profile Shoe

    - Another way you can open your bottle requires a little force.Wrap the bottom of your bottle in a thin towel and place it in the heel of a lightly cushioned shoe. While holding the wine bottle + shoe in place, smack the heel of the shoe against the wall. The wine will eventually force the cork out because liquids act like a solid when in a container. Make sure to stop when your cork is far enough out to pull it the rest of the way. Otherwise you will end up with a spill.

Although these methods will work in a pinch, we always recommend using a wine key to open any of our Keel + Curley wines!
